Murder was the case...

So I found this super rad blog called Pop Sensation over at:
http://salmongutter.blogspot.com/

And its such a great repository for old pulp covers. Its a great collection of old school trashy, campy, and just plain awesome illustration. It sorta makes you sad to realize this chunk of the commercial illustration industry isn't really around anymore, largely thanks to photography (and cinimax negating the need to have these kinds of stories in book form - thanks cable).
But anyway, I really loved pouring through all these old covers so much that I just had to make my own. So this is my homage to the old pulp covers of days gone by. Hope you like it.
Thanks Pop Sensation!

In prog

This ones for Rommel...
I hope this helps to answer your question. First I try to figure out the overall gesture. I usually do this without reference. This keeps things a bit more exaggerated and helps to push the rhythm more. Then, I go to reference for all the bits I can't figure out. Which works out pretty well for 2 reasons. 1- it forces me to solve more problems with understanding how the forms actually move and work. 2- it makes sure that the reference helps to inform what I want to do, without dictating what it has to be. Usually I have like 5 or more references for 1 image. A hand here, a foot there, a smile I like. And then it all gets frankensteined together. Once I have the overall line, I start to add value, and then color. Always in that order. If I was a better painter, I would start with value and let the forms just loosly come together. but this is what seems to be working for me right now.

Here are some of the weblings when they were still in progress.
Hope you like 'em.

weblings

more to come, eventually...

process

I'm usually not very good about adhering to or keeping track of my process, but this time I made a special effort to remember to keep my stages. This was an unusual piece too, in that it started small and just got bigger and bigger. Anyhoo, its finally done and I can move on.

revisiting Thor WIP

So I've been trying to loosen up, to get away from such a linear style. So I thought a fun project might be to go back and revisit an old job. Specifically the very first thing I ever painted in Photoshop. It was a Marvel trading card image of Thor and Hercules. When I get a bit further, I'll post the original. But for now here is what I've been able to tinker with before bed tonite.
Goodnight for now.
:P

BFG

So just in case you ever wondered what the soldiers of the future will look like, here you go. A completely realistic, and utterly practical cyborg and accurately sized weapon, complete with custom graphics on the ammo. You're welcome.

BFH Gunner Killer

Dang, I love this game ( Battlefield Heroes ). But I couldn't help but feel that it was missing something. And then it hit me. What WWII FPS would be complete without the obligatory walker mech?

Well, anyways, this is my tribute to BFH. The Nat "Gunner Killer".

Mr Noodle

I can't wait for the next month or so, I'll finally have a bunch of stuff I'll be able to show. But until then, I did a quick sketch of Mr. Noodle from Elmo's world. I watch these with my daughter over and over again. Its really mind numbing stuff. So when I watch 'em I usually entertain myself by trying to figure out how each puppet is being moved and when and how they're using green screens. But occasionally I actually find myself laughing at Mr. Noodle. The real Mr. Noodle, not his weirdo brother, that guys just lame.

Bamboo test drive

before bed sketch to test out my new bamboo. I finally got around to replacing my old wacom intuos 1. Its pretty cool, nice and small. it gets the job done. But I just got a cintique at work tho, and it rocks. So now I think I might have to get a tablet pc, it costs about the same and you get a whole computer to go along with the screen to draw on.

hedshots

I know I haven't posted in a while, but it hasn't been for lack of things to do. I have two games I'm working on or have worked on and I just need to wait for them to get out. Of course, I could be doin other stuff on my own, you know, right after I excersize more, and floss, and recycle. But unitl then, here is some stuff from the game I'm working on now. This are really just some teaser images. The full art (in prog)can be seen on the game site.
http://www.webwars.com/weblings/index.html

The game should be out later this year. Until then, hope you likes!

Medusa

This was done for a friendly art challenge with some other concept guys. This is my take on Madame Medusa. I really had fun on this, I wanted her to look like she was a little haggered, like she's probably had one too many, once too often.

more lunch

so far so good, Here's another lunch sketch. I realize I've done the whole glowing ball thing twice in a row now. I'll have to avoid that for a while. Oh well.

lunchtime art

So my co-workers and I recently decided to try to make better use of our lunchbreaks, by using that time to see if we could crank out some quick sketches. So far, I've done these two. I'm trying to get one done at least every Tuesday and Thurday, or for as long as its fun or I get too busy ;p
